How to choose the best teleprompter app for your iPhone
The right app depends on how you record. Test your own script, your camera setup and an exported take before choosing a teleprompter.

This guide is written by Prompter, the app available from promp.app. It is a buying checklist from the product’s publisher, not an independent ranking or a claim that we have tested every alternative.
Start with the job: recording a video on one iPhone, reading beside a separate camera, or delivering a live presentation. A camera recorder is useful for the first job; a comfortable text-only rehearsal screen may be enough for the others. Here are seven checks you can run with the same short script in each app you try.
1. Can it record with the camera you want to use?
For a one-phone setup, check that the app records video while showing your script, then test the front or back camera you plan to use. An app’s built-in camera does not automatically mean its script can float over another app’s camera. Prompter records using its own front or back camera view; see the iPhone recording walkthrough.
2. Can you put the words close to the lens?
Record ten seconds and watch your eyes. Text that is easy to read in the centre of a large screen can still pull your gaze away from the lens. Check whether you can adjust the script’s position and visible area. Prompter offers a lens-first mode and a movable, resizable script panel.
3. Can you recover when the text gets ahead?
Read a sentence, pause for a breath, then start again. Check how you pause, resume and return to a missed line before using the app for a real take. In Prompter, you can set the scrolling pace, tap the script to pause or resume, and swipe back. Rehearse these controls so an adjustment does not interrupt your delivery.
4. Is it readable from your recording position?
Set the phone at the distance you will actually use. Try a larger font and a narrower reading area, then check for squinting or obvious left-to-right eye movement in a test clip. Prompter lets you choose text size, typeface, a high-contrast theme and the text background over the camera. No single font size works for every screen, distance or reader.
5. Can you practise without making a recording?
A rehearsal helps you catch written phrases that are awkward aloud and set a pace you can sustain. Prompter’s Rehearse mode scrolls your script without recording or saving a video. If you use a separate camera or webcam, you can also place the phone beside its lens and use this mode as a reading screen.
6. Does a saved take fit your publishing workflow?
Finish one test recording, play it back and export it before deciding. Check that the sound is present, that the video framing works for your destination, and whether an export watermark is acceptable. Prompter keeps takes organised by script, lets you preview them, and supports saving to Photos or sharing to the app where you publish.
7. Are the limits and storage clear?
Check the free script allowance, export restrictions, subscription terms and whether an account is required. Prompter stores scripts and recordings on your device and requires no account to start. Its free version includes up to two scripts and a small watermark on exported videos. Pro removes the watermark and unlocks unlimited scripts; current options and regional prices appear in the app before purchase.
If you need cloud collaboration, voice-following scrolling, a remote control or a particular camera format, verify that specific requirement in the app you are considering. A general teleprompter description is not proof of those capabilities.
Compare apps using one script and one exported test clip. Choose based on the result you can repeat comfortably, including any limitations that matter to your workflow.
Questions
What is the most important feature in an iPhone teleprompter?
For a one-phone video workflow, start with script reading and camera recording in the same app. Then check script placement near the lens, readable text and controls for recovering your place. For a separate camera, a rehearsal-only reading screen may be sufficient.
How should I compare free teleprompter apps?
Create a short script, record it and export the result. Check the script limit, watermark, recording restrictions, account requirements and any purchase prompt. Prompter’s free version includes two scripts and a small export watermark; Pro removes those limits.
Is this an independent ranking of teleprompter apps?
No. This checklist is published by Prompter. It explains practical tests you can use when comparing apps and describes Prompter’s own workflow; it does not rank competitors.
